Technology and Business in 2012

Resolutions – an annoying group of things you will do better. Forget them this year. Instead, pick ONE “action” that you will integrate into your business and get started.

My suggestion? Technology.

If you haven’t already integrated every form of technology into your business, you will quickly be left in an “i cloud” of dust. This goes from the standard  tools like a website and social media platforms (facebook, linkedin, twitter) all the way to mobile applications, cloud computing software options, virtual events, SEO optimization and more. And that is only the external stuff. Internally, you want to integrate technology through every aspect of your communication with clients AND staff and even be sure it plays a role in how you manage your admin tasks. There is so much happening; more than you care you to think about. But if you don’t get on the wagon now, your competition will rise above you. And fast.

2012 is a game changing year. Get in the game.

Branding is KEY!

A good idea is a good idea. A great product is a great product. But if you tank on branding from the start, ideas turn to shit and your product wont ever hit the shelf. Here are some tips about branding and how to make smart  decisions from the get go.

  1. Seize the high ground. Establish your brand on positive attributes like “making meaning,” “doing good,” “changing the world,” and “making people happy”–not doing in your competition. Think about it: when is the last time you bought a product to hurt a company’s competition? (Other than a cell phone maybe!) That’s not why you spend your dollars. If you want to beat your competition, establish an uplifting brand, but don’t try to establish a brand based on your silly desire to beat the competition.
  2. Create ONE message.  I see this all the time. A brand or idea with dual purpose. It’s hard enough to create and communicate one branding message; however, many companies try to establish more than one because they are afraid of being niched and want the “entire” market.  Pick one message, see if it works, and then try another. But don’t try several at once.
  3. Speak English. Not necessarily, English, but speak in non-jargonese. If your positioning statement uses any acronyms, the odds are that (a) most people won’t understand your branding, and (b) your branding won’t last very long. Not to be an ageist, but a good test is to ask your parents if they understand what your positioning means–assuming your parents aren’t also in marketing or inventors.
  4. Cascade the message.  Let’s say that you craft the perfect branding message or logo.  Now cascade your message up and down your organization. The marketing department of many companies assume that once they’ve put out a press release or run an ad, the entire world understands the message. But sadly, it’s unlikely that even the entire company does! Start with key executives in your company and work down to the security guard. make sure everyone gets it!
  5. Focus on PR, not advertising. Many companies waste away millions of dollars trying to establish brands with advertising. When it comes to branding, too much money is worse than too little because when you have a lot of money, you spend a lot of money on stupid things like Super Bowl commercials. Brands are built on what people are saying about you, not what you’re saying about yourself. People say good things about you when (a) you have a great product and (b) you get people to spread the word about it.
  6. Strive for humanness.  Great brands achieve a high level of humaness. They speak to you as an individual, not as part of a market. It’s “my iPod.” “My Macintosh.” “My Harley Davidson.” “My bottle of Coke.” Make things feel accessible and personal to the user!
  7. Flow with the go. At the end of the day, customers ultimately determine what your brand means. To a great degree, you take your best shot, and then you see what sticks. Or, more accurately, you see what customers make stick for you. For decades Apple has tried to make the Macintosh brand stand for power. For decades consumers believe the Macintosh brand stands for easy to use and design. Ultimately, just flow with what’s working and be happy that anything is flowing at all!

If you apply these and some of the more basic rules, you are on your way.

Good Luck!

Make Your “Stop Doing List”

I had a boyfriend who was obsessed with “to do” lists. He had an ongoing list with hollow circles and as he accomplished things, he would fill in the circle. He often had lists divided into daily and monthly goals so he could strategize his attack. Goals would range from pay cell phone bill, work on script, call Tom and earn $5000 by next Tuesday.  But guess what? He never actually completed the lists. And I bet it’s partially because he spent so much time making them!

Whether you’re a business owner, executive or stay at home mom consider trying a “STOP doing list”, a basic tool to help you stop wasting time and in turn, focus your energy on achieving results.  For example, must you visit Facebook six times a day? No! Stop spending free time on netstalking sites. Do you have to reply to every single email the moment you receive it? No! Stop replying to emails right away. Stop getting distracted by work on the weekends or during family time. Stop replacing exercise  with work. Stop, stop, stop!

When writing your “STOP doing list”, think about what you enjoy doing, where your income is derived and anything you do which is blatantly wasteful. Next, write every one out keeping activities grouped into “things to completely stop” and “things to limit”. Don’t worry if the pages start adding up! The longer the list the more excited you should be. This means it will be easier for you to start using your time more efficiently and results will be visible faster.

Obviously, these days Facebook & Twitter are useful tools in business. But many people go overboard with their time on both. So be objective and realistic about how much time is too much time. No one expects you to cut out things that are generating solid revenue. Once you get a good feel about what you should stop doing, you will master the art of what you should be doing.

Good Luck!

Top Ten Marketing Musts

As soon as you mention the words “marketing” or “publicity” people slump down in their chairs. It’s intimidating yes – because most people don’t really understand how to make these things fit in to today’s budgets.

There are of course a gazillion ways – but you first need to understand what ”marketing” means and how much it has evolved over the past decade.  “Marketing” is every sliver of contact your company has with anyone in the outside world. That is everything from your website, to who answers your phones, how your email signature reads, branding strategies, your attitude and the passion you walk in with each morning. If any one of these things are off, you’re compromising your investment and future success.  Here are ten sure fire ways to market your business successfully in today’s market and some wont cost you a red cent. We encourage our clients to use this formula and hope you’ll listen too!

1. Marketing does not mean investing a lot of money. But of course you can. You will get just as far investing time, energy, imagination and information. Aligning your values and getting organized doesnt cost you a penny. Think of these little but big things as the investment & surround yourself with a team that makes those rituals part of their daily life.

2. Stay commited and consistent.Often brands try an idea, give it six weeks and then change it up in fear it isnt working. Your idea may not make big impact for sixty days or even a year but that doesn’t mean it wont ever. The trick is building a brillant plan and sticking to it. In time, the commitment is what brings you results – not the actual plan. Also, be consistent – especially with your branding, logo, concept, etc. Don’t change things too much or too often. Give things a chance to work and make an impression.

3. You must have an artillary of marketing weapons! Marketing doesn’t just end with a sale. That mentality will be your demise. Keep people interested afterwards. Send them a thank you, offer an incentive, cater to their specific likes – make them think they are part of your brand’s growth. Stroke their egos just a tad!

4. Get technical. You can’t possibly compete with a brand that has multiple faces. Website, Twitter, Facebook, Tumbler - you need to step up your game. Find an intern that has mastered these resources, go to the library and get a book on social media, barter with a friend. It’s really not that hard to figure out if you’re willing to invest the time.

5. Dont compromise. This is a big one! If you have an idea, have been told it’s great but are frustrated things are moving slowly – here’s the solution - dont change a thing! You can’t be everything to everyone. There may be a few people who dont get what you’re doing or why you’re doing it. My favorite peice of advice, ”so what”! Practice those words and keep truckin. Word spreads fast so if you stick to your guns you will attract the right people. And if not, so what!

6. Dont be afraid of the age old telephone.  We are so digitized these days that people fail to connect on a real level. Hearing someone’s voice delivers more than just words - you can hear passion, commitment and honesty – values that are important in any relationship.

7.  Give stuff away. And by this, I don’t mean the kitchen sink. Be smart and deliver a program or incentive that people will appreciate but that wont hurt your bottom line. A wine store is better off offering glasses of wine every day than advertising in a daily newspaper. Over time, they will reap greater return and get to know their audience by building loyalty.

8. Skip the bells & whistles.Today’s consumers are smarter than ever and know the difference between style and substance. They don’t need whip cream and a cherry on top. They want trusted content and factual information in the simpliest and quickest form.

9.Be the next Fedex/Kinkos.When your competition comes staring you down, dont back away. Instead, try and find a way to work together. You may discover a partnership is more lucrative.

10. Act like a kid! Well, not all the time. But let’s face it. Kids have more fun.  They ask a lot of questions, they’re persistent, they love to learn, their imaginations run wild, they dont take no for an answer and they love being the “first” to try something new.  Study their behavior and apply it. You wont just be the new kid on the block, you’ll be the smartest.

And there you have it – the secret formula to success. If you need help making it happen, shoot us an email at info@winkpr.com.
